PEMCO Limited’s Renee Dona recently awarded a high school student a $5,000 scholarship at the U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce’s (USPAACC) CelebrAsian 2015 Conference in Bethesda, Maryland. The 30-year old full service real estate solutions company, a provider of asset management, valuations, and property preservation services, has given a total of $25,000 to an aspiring high school student since 2011. The scholarship amounts range from $2,500 to $5,000 and are awarded to between ten and twenty high school seniors nationwide, out of an average of 3,200 students applying each year.

Dona said, “Overall I really enjoyed my experience at this event. Although, I mostly participated in the scholarship award ceremony I was able to meet other minority businesses that strive for the same goal, which is success and corporate social responsibility. When the sponsors were in line waiting to present our awards a few of the students introduced themselves as well as sharing their life experiences and why they are pursuing higher education. One of their common reasons was to pursue their passion in their career field and to be able to make a difference in society. Their stories were so touching that I and many others in the room became teary-eyed. I felt very honored to have been a part of this special day for all the students. I appreciate what USPAAC represents and their mission to provide opportunities, education, training, networking, partnerships and overall to be the voice of all Asian-American businesses.”

Asian American businesses have contributed and endowed their own scholarships and major corporations have established their Hallmark Scholarships with USPAACC, through which more than a million dollars in scholarship benefits have been awarded since 1989.

Scholarship FAQs from the USPAACC site:

What is the scholarship selection process?

The USPAACC Scholarship Committee consists of entrepreneurs, corporate representatives, government officials and educators. They meet for a full day to review the applications, deliberate and make their selections. Then, the Committee members present their recommendations to the USPAACC National President & CEO for final review. After the scholarship recipients are selected, they are notified by mail and have to confirm their ability to attend USPAACC’s CelebrAsian National Conference in June. As part of the Scholarship Award Program, USPAACC will provide travel arrangements and hotel accommodations to all scholarship recipients.

What is the amount of the scholarship?

The amount of the scholarship depends on the sponsors’ contributions and varies between $2,500 and $5,000. USPAACC will send the scholarship funds directly to the school the recipient will attend in the fall semester.

How many scholarships are provided each year?

Each year the number of scholarship awards varies between 10 and 20.

When will the scholarship recipients be notified?

Scholarship recipients will be notified by mid-April. Due to the thousands of scholarship applications we receive, we will notify ONLY the awardees.

Is attending the annual conference and the scholarship award presentation ceremony required?

Yes. We want you to meet your scholarship sponsor and other scholarship recipients, as well as participate in various educational programs and activities during the three-day Conference, including meet and interact with Asian American entrepreneurs, scientists, educators, and government, community and industry leaders.
